I was told that i was chronically constipated by an internist an that i would always have to take a laxative to help this condition. But after being prescribed docusate sodium to avoid straining after a hysterectomy, I have found my long term answer. No diarrhea, cramping or negative side effects at all. It just works!

Why does it say not to use it for bowel cleansing procedure?

Two ducosate sodium, 100mg per night was recommended by my physician in 1996,because of severe constipation problems. Now, I still take this dosage nightly. What are side effects? I am 81 yrs old and have experienced embalance, neuropathy & deafness for about 6 years. Is the duco. sodium any relation to my synptions. Otherwise, I am healthy and active. MRP

My chronic constipation became severe enough to seek a specialist who recommended this pill 3 times a day (w/meals). It has been a help; I have been taking it for almost 2 years with magnesium. (Nobody told me until this article that it was for "temporary" treatment!?) A year ago I developed nerve tremors similar to Parkinsons. Perhaps too much of this chemical caused it? I am switching back to bran again as of this writing.

Family doctor recommended docusate sodium capsules for stool softener, it has helped but have noticed within past 2 or 3 years the sudden bloating and diarrehia after eating a meals. Tried to stay away from fried foods but it does not seem to matter. Very uncomfortable feeling when going out to eat. Have to rush to find a bathroom. Don't know if this is the cause form being on docusate sodium daily capsule for over 8 - 10 years. Inquiring for my husband.

i have to be on a strong narcotic medto help me with my neck pain with metal plates and screws. the narcotics makes it so i can not pass a bowel movement with great difficulty.i have been taking this first name brand, then generic-its cheaper. both worked equally as well. i no longer have to strain. i am regular and go everyday. if i stopthis then i will be in trouble. but it is costly if you are on a fixed income like i am. 3.90 for 30 caplets and i need 2-3 a day, so that is a 2 week supply. i think i will be on this for the rest of my life even though i eat tons of fiber, the meds gets in my way. the narcotics takes away my appetite and i have lost 50 pounds which i needed to lose anyways. but im thankful for this med. ducolax is more money, get the generic, same ingredient only cheaper. my stools are now softer but still like balls and rocks dropping in the toilet, that is how bad the narcotics makes it. i tried ex-lax and all that made me do was have uncontrolled #2 movements at night while i was sleeping which was bad, i had to wear a diaper at night to prevent any leakage! and i am only 54! too young for thatRead More Read Less

I was taking 200 mg per day. I have reason to believe it was causing lower GI irritation and a burning sensation of the rectum after bowel movements.

Due to side effects of a different medication, I was unable to have a bowel movement without extreme pain. After taking this drug, the pain was gone and I was able to use the washroom again!
