So does this hurt you at all when I do this?
Jolene Schneider (JOH-leen Schni-der) has been living with lupus for more than a decade. Medication helps her manage rashes, joint pain, fatigue and other problems, but the disease's unexpected flare-ups make it hard to plan ahead.
Friends will call up say can you come do this and I'll have to tell them no I can't or even at the last minute I'll have to call em up and say look I have to cancel and those sorts of things really kind of get to me.
Lupus mostly strikes women between 15 and 45 and is one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose and treat. But new treatments and research are on the horizon.
It's much better than it had been but we still don't have that cure, you know, or that one drug that can treat everything.
A University of Pittsburgh program is gathering lupus experts of all types under one roof to accelerate finding a cure. They've developed and are currently testing a quick and easy blood test.
The test is to diagnose Lupus properly but also to monitor activity of the disease and we think the test also has the potential to predict upcoming flares of Lupus.
This stepped up effort to conquer lupus gives patients like Jolene new hope.
I look forward to any cure that they can come up with, or, you know, even if they just educate the public about Lupus, that's a step in the right direction.
They plan to do that and much more. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
